Although I may come off as hypocritical after posting so much about Victoria’s Secret, I’ve found a recent trend of nudity in magazine editorials. Of course, this has always been around, but it seems that there is a new acceptance of it. The main reason that photographers feel it is necessary? Shock value. By having a model pose naked, people are more likely to stop and look at all of the pictures. This is one of the reasons that Terry Richardson is such a well-known photographer-- the apparent sex appeal. You could grab any fashion magazine from a new stand, and there will be at least one breast shown. Personally, I don’t see the point of this. The main reason for an editorial and fashion in general is to showcase beautiful women wearing beautiful clothing. So why would you limit the amount of clothing worn on a model? Is that not just wasting money on an advertisement? Let’s be pragmatic here, it’s not like the people who look at the ad merely because a gorgeous woman is showing her breasts are actually going to buy or even look at the skirt and boots that she is wearing!
I was beginning to cringe as I opened magazines such as Love because I was afraid of just seeing so many young girls show more skin than needed so they could get a career boost. I don’t have a problem with nudity, I’m far from a prude, but there’s something awkward about flipping through a magazine at Chapters that has so many naked women. It’s almost the same as looking at porn in public. I’m sure many people would never think about doing that. I was about to leave the store, leaving for once, empty handed, when I caught a glimpse of the new Vogue Italian issue. Of course, I had already seen the cover on the thread for my favourite model Freja Beha Erichsen on The Fashion Spot, but looking at pictures on your computer does not have the same effect as seeing them on glossy pages in a magazine. The cover, as usual, looked amazing, and I instantly loved the pairing of Freja and the other models like Iris. And although I don’t know a word of Italian, I flipped through the magazine until I found the editorial. What I saw took my breath away. Now I don’t mean this in a erotic way, although the editorial features three beautiful women sprawled naked on the ground, but the entire editorial was just so beautiful. The fact that I didn’t think of sex a single time while looking at what could be such an erotic ed is amazing in itself. But their porcelain skin, beautiful bone structure, and magnificent furs made things seem classy and glamorous. Even without any clothing on, it had an air of elegance that I couldn’t top if I wore the most beautiful furs and pearls. This is a shock factor used in the most perfect way. Needless to say, I bought the magazine, without feeling dirty in any way. Whether I hope that this becomes the new trend, or if I’m perfectly fine with this being a diamond in the rough, well, I haven’t decided yet.
NOTE: because there is of course nudity in this editorial, I didn't post the pictures. If you want to see them please go to this link
